 Why Are Jury Trials Important?

Imagine you and a group of friends are trying to make a fair decision. Sometimes, everyone must agree to pick a winner. Other times, most of you agreeing is enough. In Arizona courtrooms, juries work the same way! A jury can be as small as six people or as large as twelve, depending on the case. In criminal trials, juries must agree unanimously, while in some civil cases, most agreeing is enough. The power of juries comes from working together to make a fair decision.

Illustration Ideas:

  • Different Jury Groups: Draw groups of six, eight, or twelve people working together.
  • Hands Voting: Show hands raised in a vote—some up, some down—to represent how not all decisions must be unanimous.
  • Jurors Taking Notes: Show jurors carefully listening and writing down important details.
  • Jury Deliberation Room: Jurors discussing the case privately to make a fair decision.
  • Juror Asking a Question: A juror in the jury box raising their hand to ask a witness a question.
  • Jury Foreperson Delivering the Verdict: A juror handing the final decision to the courtroom clerk.
  • A Balance Scale – A scale held steady by different numbers of hands, representing the various sizes of juries and teamwork.

Artwork Deadline is August 15, 2025
